Product Review

Samsung's ML-1430 offers a great selection of features at a value price. It has the smallest footprint of any laser printer in its class. Plus, Samsung's special Toner Save button extends the toner cartridge capacity by 40 percent. At 12,000 pages, it has the highest monthly duty cycle in its price range, so it is definitely ready for your workload.

Additional features include a Reprint button that lets you reprint the last page you sent to print, even if your computer is off or you're working on another job. A Cancel button stops print jobs with just one touch. Get high-quality printing on transparencies, envelopes, labels, and card stock. The unit's 600 dpi resolution provides sharp text and fine graphics. A 150-sheet paper bin lets you print long documents without interruption.

The ML-1430 supports virtually any operating system--Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT 4.0, and XP, and Macintosh OS 8.6 or later. It also supports a wide distribution of Linux OS, including Red Hat, Caldera, Debian, Mandrake, Slackware, SuSE, and Turbolinux.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Era of the Disposable Laser Printer, September 13, 2002

This review is from: Samsung ML-1430 Laser Printer (Office Product)
The GOOD:
-Print quality is excellent for both text and graphics . . . even compared with ... HP brand networked laser printers. Note that I'm making this comparison running the Samsung in "Toner Saver" mode.
-Easy to set up, including USB and printer drivers.
-Toner Save mode . . . supposedly saves toner, and output quality is not degraded significantly.
-FASTThe BAD:
-8MB of RAM (and this is NOT upgradable) If you print a lot of graphics, you might want to choose some other printer. Note that the ML-1450 comes with only half as much RAM as the ML-1430. . . but you can add an EDO SIMM to the 1450 to bump it up as high as 68MB! So if you print graphics, the 1450 would be worth the extra money.
-Will probably need to be replaced at roughly 50,000 pages printed. For more information, read the 'troubleshooting' section of the owner's manual, page 7.5
-Does not include a FULL toner cartridge. Samsung isn't the only manufacturer that pulls this...Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars How to fix paper feeder issue, September 14, 2006
brs (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Samsung ML-1430 Laser Printer (Office Product)
Mine worked fine for 2 years as well, but gradually stopped feeding paper. The issue is that the rubber pickup roller worn out.
The roller is plastic with a rubber band sitting on it. The rubber band needs to be either "rotated" or replaced.

Fix #1:
Disassemble the pickup roller. Rotate the rubber band 180 degree. Only half of it is used, so the other half is not worn out. Will work for another 2000 pages.

Fix #2:
Order a new one from [...], part number JC72-00109A.

Note: you have to be quite handy to be able to reassemble the printer. First remove the back panel (two screws and two latches). Then top panel (two screws.) Then remove toner cartridge. Then the piece that sits on top of toner cartridge
(4 screws.) Before removing it, note how the roller attaches to the black switch rod. Finally remove one screw from roller pickup assembly and disassemble the roller. Carefully pull the rubber band (it can tear easily.)...Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overall printer for the price, December 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Samsung ML-1430 Laser Printer (Office Product)
We've been using the ML-1430 for three months now and absolutely love it. It's a great overall printer, excellent print quality even in Toner Saver mode (slightly lighter than regular mode). The toner drum supplied with the printer lasts about 1000 pages or so - even with the Toner Saver mode turned on.
This is hooked up to work with three PC's on a wireless network. (XP, Win98, Win2K). Setup was straightforward. All drivers, manuals etc are available on www.samsungusa.com.

Issues: The buffer is small - 8 MB and is not upgradeable. Poses a problem while printing large pdf documents - takes a while to spool to the printer.
No duplex printing!
Labels and envelopes can be a challenge with this printer. Envelopes sometimes get stuck.
Overall: Great little laser printer for home office use. Small footprint, fairly quiet operation, great print quality, economical - about 3 c a page. Would not hesitate recommending this outstanding printer.
